VIDEO: Canine team tracks woman through miles of swamp and thick forest

Police said suspect crashed into a cyclist and ran from the scene on foot

MANISTEE COUNTY, Mich. On Friday, May 3, at approximately 3:45 p.m. troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Cadillac Post were called to crash involving a car and a cyclist on Kurick Road near Dzuibanek Road in Springdale Township.

The driver of the car, a 35-year-old woman from Benzonia, struck a bicyclist and fled the scene on foot. When troopers arrived, they spoke with a 41- year-old Traverse City woman who initially claimed to be the driver. She later admitted she was the passenger.

The driver had a warrant for her arrest and fled the scene. Troopers searched the vehicle and found methamphetamine and a stun gun. An MSP canine team was called to the scene and a perimeter was established. The canine and his handler tracked the woman through approximately five miles of swamp and thick forest.

She was arrested when she exited the woods along a roadway to awaiting officers. She was arrested and lodged in the Manistee County Jail pending arraignment.

The bicyclist, a 73-year-old woman from Thompsonville, was transported to Munson Medical Center in Frankfort for non-life-threatening injuries. Troopers were assisted by officers from the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians.
