Original Dec. 18 news release:
On Dec. 18, 2022 at approximately 9:50 a.m., troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie Post responded to the area of M-28 near County Road 444 in Lakefield Township (Luce County) for a report of a two-vehicle injury crash.

Upon arrival, troopers found a Ford F250 being driven by a 19-year-old male subject from Newberry was heading east on M-28 approximately 1/2 mile east of County Road 444 when it crossed over the centerline. The Ford F250 struck a Chrysler minivan head-on which was being driven by Alice Nelson, a 64-year-old female also from Newberry.

The driver of the Ford F250 was treated at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released. Nelson was pronounced deceased on scene. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash and the investigation remains ongoing.

Troopers were assisted by officers from the DNR, Columbus Township Fire Dept., Luce County Sheriff’s Office, and Luce County EMS.
