Volunteers needed for American Legion 2022 Children's Toy Run

Legion riders gather toys for kids, collect donations to support local veterans in upcoming bike run

American Legion Post No. 3, along with its legion riders and auxiliary, is getting ready to present the 2022 Children’s Toy Run next month, but additional volunteers and bikers are needed to bring it all together.

“Anybody who would like to donate is welcome,” said American Legion Rider Roger Merchberger. “Toys are given to local kids, and proceeds will go to our veterans within the three counties (Chippewa, Luce, Mackinaw).”

Motorcycle riders and guests will all meet at legion post No. 3 of Sault Ste. Marie on Aug. 20 to begin two separate journeys, east and west. East run riders will travel to Barbeau, Raber, Cedarville, Kinchloe, Pickford and Rudyard before heading back to homebase. Meanwhile, west run riders will leave the Sault to travel to Kinchloe, Rudyard, Trout Lake, Strongs and Newberry to finish at the American Legion in Hulbert.

“There will be a 50/50 raffle draw along the route,” Merchberger said. “We are also planning on a silent auction.”

Registration is between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. at the Sault Ste. Marie post, overlooking the St. Marys River.

Riders may register by bringing an unwrapped toy and $10 donation or giving $15. Passengers may register with an unwrapped toy and $5 donation or by giving $15.

Biscuits and gravy, fruit and coffee cake will be provided upon arrival to help jumpstart the day.

Riders will tour neighboring communities to complete their journeys around 5:30 p.m. Raffle winners will be announced at both legion locations.

Pulled pork sliders, coleslaw and chips will be available at the Sault legion for its riders, volunteers and guests.

“We are looking for volunteers to be present at locations to help with chips and ticket sales,” Merchberger said.

Unfortunately, the run could not take place last year due to weather conditions and COVID related concerns.

“I was the only person to ride in the rain,” said Merchberger, who is dedicated to supporting area veterans and children.

If riding up from out of the area and in need of a place to stay, camping is available at American Legion Post #393, located at 37661 W. 5th St. Hulbert, MI 49748. Its phone number is 906-876-2341.
