4-H ARTicluate Journalists cover Middle School Christmas Concert (30 Photos)

SAMS band students play familiar holiday music to get everyone in the Christmas groove

Three 4-H ARTiculate Journalist club members covered the 2022 Middle School Christmas Concert on Tuesday, under the supervision of Soo Leader journalist Sara Eisinger.

Carter Tuhro took photos, while Eiley Greiser interviewed journalistic peer and band member Jade Hu. Grieser also helped write the following article:

The bleachers were packed at the 2022 Middle School Christmas Concert on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 6. when 47 band students played familiar holiday music to get everyone in the Christmas groove.

Written in the concert pamphlet was the quote: “Music gives a soul to the universe; wings to the mind; flight to the imagination; and life to everything.”

Eighth grade clarinet player Jade Hu could not agree more with these inspirational words.

“I like how all the instruments blend together and everything goes together,” said Hu, who also plays violin and piano. “You learn to listen to the other players.”

The fifth graders hit the night off with English folk songs like “Hot Cross Buns” and the ever so traditional “Merrily We Roll Along.”

Sixth grade band members followed up with “Jingle Bells,” “Up on the Housetop,” and “Siberian Sleigh Ride.”

Both grades joined forces to play “Lightly Row,” “Good King Wenceslas,” and “Jolly Old St. Nicholas.”

Band Conductor Sara Perfetti congratulated all her musicians on their performances. It was the last Christmas concert for eighth grade students as middle school students.

Hu is one of the many eighth graders who will enrol in band next year to celebrate next Christmas as a high school freshman.

Seventh and eighth grade band members made the crowd cheer with their rendition of “The Chipmunk Song” and “I want a hippopotamus for Christmas.”

Hu’s favorite song to play was "Bell Carol Rock."

“I look forward to having the eighth graders again next year,” Perfetti said with a smile.
