Backpacks with school supplies to be handed out Aug. 12

United Way, Salvation Army still need help packing and distributing 600 backpacks

The United Way of the EUP, Salvation Army, and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services join forces this Friday, Aug. 12, to distribute school supplies for young learners across the county. You are invited to help.

The agencies are holding the community fair to hand out 600 backpacks loaded with school supplies to any family with children who might benefit. The event offers free hot dogs and family activities 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at VanCitters Athletic Field, also called the Sault Athletic Field, on Seymour Street.

Volunteers are needed to load the packs 1-4 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 11, in the Salvation Army Thrift Store at 220 Osborn Blvd., kitty-corner to the post office. Sign up at https://tinyurl.com/ybtybbuf. Workers can select between two staffing options.

Volunteers are also needed to help distribute packs during the Friday fair. Sign up for the main event at https://tinyurl.com/583vf9p9. There are four blocks of time from which to choose. Set up begins at 8 a.m., with gates opening at 11 a.m.
