Chippewa County airport upgrades ready to fly with new funds

The money will be used to repair runways and taxiways

Chippewa County International Airport in Kincheloe will receive just under $1.5 million dollars in grant money for improvements.

The United States Department of Transportation awarded the grant that will be used to repair runways and taxiways, including repainting markers.

According to Tami Beseau, airport manager, in 2022, there were 48,000 passengers that used commercial service, which is only 1,000 less than their best year (2019).

Another 2,500 passengers from private aircraft also used the airport.

Beseau.said that it's the lone airport in Michigan that had received a federal grant to this point this year.

"I am very proud of that," Beseau said. "When you only have three months to do some type of something, you better get your grant in and get everything ready to go. I am happy to say we are ready to go."

Beseau reassured that normal commercial and private air traffic will be not affected while the work is being done.
