Newberry woman dies in Lakefield Township two-vehicle crash

Police believe alcohol was a factor in the collision and the investigation remains ongoing

On Dec. 18, 2022, at approximately 9:50 a.m., troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie Post responded to the area of M-28 near County Road 444 in Lakefield Township (Luce County) for a report of a two-vehicle injury crash.

Upon arrival, troopers found a Ford F250 being driven by a 19-year-old male from Newberry who was heading east on M-28 approximately half a mile east of County Road 444 when it crossed over the centerline.

The Ford F250 struck a Chrysler minivan head, which was being driven by Alice Nelson, a 64-year-old female also from Newberry. The driver of the Ford F250 was treated at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released. Nelson was pronounced deceased on the scene.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Troopers were assisted by officers from the DNR, Columbus Township Fire Dept., Luce County Sheriff’s Office, and Luce County EMS.
