Wednesday morning winds roil Superior waters (10 Photos)

The National Weather Service issued a Storm Warning for mariners on Lake Superior and Whitefish Bay Wednesday

Wicked winds and waves were captured Wednesday morning on the shoreline at Pt. Iroquois Lighthouse in Chippewa County.

The waves here were not nearly as big as those at Whitefish Point and areas west of there.

Persistent westerly winds kept the biggest waves over Lake Superior. However, later Wednesday night, the winds are expected to shift more northwesterly thus bringing bigger surf to Whitefish Bay especially from Brimley to Dollar Settlement.

The National Weather Service issued a Storm Warning for mariners on Lake Superior and Whitefish Bay Wednesday. The service said winds could top 50 knots (58mph) and waves nearing 20 feet in the worse conditions.

Several freighters, from DeTour to Whitefish Point, were anchored down waiting out the storm.

The James R. Barker was anchored down in Whitefish Bay waiting to continue on to Duluth, MN.
