In October 2021, a victim of an alleged sexual assault that occurred in 2017 contacted law enforcement to make a complaint. A trooper from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Gaylord Post conducted the investigation.

The victim stated at the time the alleged assault took place, she didn’t understand what sexual assault was. The assaults continued throughout the summer of 2017, and the victim stated none of the sex was consensual. A lengthy investigation followed, and other women were identified as possible victims. One of the other women alleged she was also sexually assaulted by the suspect, now 24-year-old Tyler James McCallum from Petoskey, from 2017 through 2019.

A report was turned over to the Charlevoix County Prosecutor’s Office. A warrant was issued on February 11, 2023. McCallum was arrested while leaving his residence in Petoskey on February 13, 2023, and lodged in the Charlevoix County Jail.

McCallum was arraigned in the 90th District Court in Charlevoix County on one count Criminal Sexual Conduct First Degree Causing Injury, and one count Criminal Sexual Conduct Third Degree Force of Coercion. He was given a $50,000 cash surety bond. His next scheduled court appearance is on April 25, 2023, at 2:30 p.m.
