Previously, on 11-11-2023, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office arrested Mr. Joseph Carl Halder for arson of a structure in downtown Paradise. Halder was new to the area and joined the fire department earlier that summer.

At the time, Halder was also a person of interest in two other suspicious structure fires within Whitefish Twp.

The investigation continued as additional interviews were conducted and additional evidence was collected, resulting in the Prosecutors office authorizing two additional Felony Arson charges.

On 1-17-2024 Halder was arrested and arraigned in the 91st Dist court on two counts of Arson. The court gave Halder an additional $150,000 bond on top of his current $200,000 bond for the original charge. Halder is innocent until proven guilty.

  • The first charge stems from a structure fire which occurred in Paradise on 10-5-2023.
  • The second charge stems from a structure fire which occurred off of M-123 south of Paradise on 11-5-2023.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the MSP Fire Investigative Unit.
