Community Thanksgiving at The Salvation Army

Thanksgiving dinner includes hot turkey, fluffy mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie in a 'homey' setting

Looking for a place to go this Thanksgiving? A community Thanksgiving feast will be served at The Salvation Army of Sault Ste. Marie this Thursday, Nov. 17 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Expect hot turkey, fluffy mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie in a “homey” setting.

“We will hold a short devotion on the day of the dinner,” Corps Officer Eric Gilbert said. “We will have music, and fireplaces playing on the TVs.”

The women’s auxiliary has even made Thanksgiving decorations to help inspire a "cozy" holiday feel.

Over 200 dishes were passed out last year.

Salvation Army volunteers and staff anticipate just as many visitors this time around.

“Those who come here regularly already know each other,” Gilbert said. “We promote a fellowship that supports and loves one another. We want people to get out and get to know others in the community.”

Gilbert further encouraged participation, recognizing that some people struggle when thinking of things to be thankful for.

“My wife and I are very thankful for where we are at,” Gilbert said. “We think Thanksgiving is an important holiday to give thanks to God. We thank Him for all He has done for us and our staff. We want to share that with the public, and help them to realize that we all have something to be thankful for. My biggest thing is just waking up in the morning. I am far from perfect and will never be perfect, but I am forgiven. God accepts us the way we are at the time we say, ‘Come into my life.”

Gilbert also thanked the Sault community for the many donations received, adding, “We did not have to take a lot of money out of our general fund this year.”

Gilbert has asked that guests call ahead with reservations, if able. This helps staff and volunteers prepare. The Salvation Army of Sault Ste Marie can be reached at 906-632-6521.

Thanksgiving dinner will be served at the Salvation Army chapel on 132 West Spruce Street, across from the hospital.
