76 turkey trotters trot 5K to 'Give Cancer the Bird' this Thanksgiving (21 Photos)

"This is a good way to stay in shape, and get ready for next season," said Sault high cross country runner Brent Maurer. "It is a great cause to raise money for."

To begin this Thanksgiving morning, Sault Ste. Marie turkey trotters trotted a 5K in the sixth annual "Give Cancer the Bird" fundraiser organized by Andie Aiello and her Rock 101 team to raise money for American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of the EUP.

"I think our biggest year yet brought about 80 people," said Aiello, who was thankful everyone could run together this year after two years of virtual trotting. "We were somewhat of a fledging event before COVID. We're back in person this year. We're really excited about that. We've seen some enthusiasm, and we think it will just take a bit to continue to grow from here. We think it will happen."

A crew of approximately 76 runners met at Avery Square to register at 7:15 a.m. Runners were off along the route at 8:15 a.m.

Registration cost $35 for those who preregistered and included an event t-shirt. Medals were handed out at the Avery Square finish line, and prizes were awarded to the top three runners.

Brent Maurer, 15, is a student at Sault Area High School where he runs cross country. He was a top three finisher in today's turkey trot.

"This is a good way to stay in shape, and get ready for next season," said Maurer. "It is a great cause to raise money for."
