The varsity boys basketball game between Escanaba and Sault Ste Marie was cancelled at halftime due to a tragedy involving one of the Escanaba players.

Sault High Athletic Director Pat Bennin told SooLeader's Jim Lehocky that "the game was called at halftime because one of the Escanaba player's parents were in a serious multi-vehicle accident on US-2 just east of Escanaba this afternoon. They were on their way to see their son play in the Sault."

At halftime, the Escanaba head coach informed Bennin that his player's parents both died in the crash.

On Facebook Sault Ste. Marie Area Public Schools sent its "heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the Escanaba Boys Basketball Team and the Escanaba Community."
