Child car seat inspections at Sault City Fire Dept a success

Inspectors say the safety of your child is at stake. Knowing you have an up-to-date car seat and having it installed correctly is crucial.

The second annual Child Safety Seat Inspection event took place Friday at the Sault Ste. Marie City Fire Hall. The inclement weather made the organizers move it inside.

Parents and caregivers drove their cars inside the fire hall, where several technicians inspected the car seats, checked for expiration dates, and gave out information. Each inspection only took about 20-30 minutes.

Julianne Jahn, brought her 4-month old son with her to the inspection.

"They shared a lot of information including not adding anything to the car seat that is not already part of the car seat.  They also said not to have anything loose in the car just in case if you did get into an accident, things don't go flying," Jahn said.

With just having a child, Jahn was eager to have her car seat inspected and signed up right away.

"This is so important because there are so many different car seats and they all fit differently.  I just want to make sure I am doing it right," Jahn explained.

Event organizer, Peyton Blakely, engineer/paramedic with Sault Fire, was on site again assisting in inspecting and taking notes.

"It's very important. Parents want a piece of mind knowing that their kids are safe," Blakely said.

Just like smartphones and computers, car seats are updated and need to be fully understood to work effectively.

"They are adding new things like load legs, different straps and more tethers. If your child is properly placed in a car seat, it should be the safest one in the car," Blakely concluded.
