DEA Drug Take Back Day Saturday

Unused or expired medications can be disposed of properly at several participating law enforcement agencies.

If you have unused or expired medications that you need to get rid of properly, you can take advantage of the National Drug Enforcement Agency's (DEA) Drug Take Back Day set for this Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

This is the 26th event that gives people another opportunity for people to dispose of their medications.

All Michigan State Police posts in the Upper Peninsula, including Post 82 in Sault Ste. Marie will have their lobbies open and a disposal container available.

A Trooper will be on-site to answer any questions.

"People can take their pill-form medications in and dispose of them with no questions asked. It is very important to get those medications that are no longer needed or used disposed of properly. We handle several incidents each year where someone breaks into residences looking for medications," 8th District Public Information Officer, Lt. Mark Giannunzio, said.

Only medications in pill or capsule form will be accepted. No liquid, cream or gel medications are allowed for disposal.

Each time this DEA Take Back event is held, Giannunzio says they see an increase in people bringing in medication for disposal. However, he states, that this is not the only time MSP posts take in medications. All posts across the U.P. will take pill form medication during regular business hours Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
