Fire departments respond to structure fire in Les Cheneaux Islands

Firefighters had to take boats over and use water pumps to draw water from Lake Huron to battle the fire

Firefighters from three departments were called to a structure fire on Boot Island just southeast of Cedarville in Mackinac County this morning.

The call came in just after 7 a.m. that smoke and flames were visible from the mainland on the island.

Clark Township, Pickford and Mackinac Island Fire Departments all responded.

A staging area was set up at Lakeside Landing at the end of South Lakeside Road.

Firefighters had to take boats over and battle the fire using water pumps and draw water from Lake Huron.

Boot Island is one of many islands in the Les Cheneaux chain of islands and is home to the Nordquist Nature Preserve.

Emergency personnel on the scene told us about a half dozen homes are on Boot Island.

At this time, it is unknown if anyone was home at the time or if there were any injuries.

Drone pictures show the structure destroyed, with a building next to it heavily damaged.

Overnight rain helped dampen the forest, so the risk of the fire spreading and expanding through the woods was low.

We will continue to update as more information becomes available.
