Firefighters save ducks and still make it to parade on time

Crew quickly extinguish flames before leaving for Festival of Lights

Forty-five minutes before the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department was to participate in the Festival of Lights Parade, they were called to a small fire in a backyard at 700 Fort St.

Fire Chief Ed Miller confirms they responded around 6:15 p.m. Friday when a neighbor called in to report that a duck shelter was on fire.

When firefighters arrived, smoke and flames were visible.

The fire was quickly extinguished.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire. Nobody and no ducks were injured.

There was no structural damage to the house.

Miller said it appears an unattended heat lamp was too close to the loose bedding material in the shelter.

The scene was cleared at 6:50 p.m. and the firefighters were able to make the 7 p.m. parade after all.
