Forage Field Day will educate farmers about vital livestock crop

The Upper Peninsula Research and Extension Center is holding a Forage Field Day to educate farmers and the public about the area's largest crop by acreage.

Forages, grasses and legumes for feeding ruminant livestock are important to the region and field day participants will have an opportunity to view research plots of alfalfa and grass, and will learn best practices for managing hayfields and pasture in the U.P., a news release states.

The event will take place June 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at MSU-UPREC (E3774 University Drive in Chatham, Mich. The event is free to attend and will include a lunch featuring beef from the UPREC herd of Red Angus cattle. MSU’s forage specialist, Dr. Kim Cassida, will be the featured speaker.

Participants are also eligible to receive MEAP Phase I and MDARD RUP credits for attending. Those interested are asked to call (906) 439-5114 to register.
