Jim Martin inducted into track coach hall of fame

Coach Martin has brought home seven UP Finals and 32 Straights Area Conference Championships since 1997

Sault Area High School Cross Country Coach Jim Martin was inducted into the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association (MITCA) Hall of Fame on Friday night.

Martin has coached Sault High runners since 1997.

In that time, girls cross country has won two UP Finals. They have brought home the Straits Area Conference Championship 17 times.

Boys track and field teams have won five UP Finals. They are 15 time champions of the Straights Area Conference Championship.

Martin grew up in Jackson, where he was an all-state runner, himself.

His Sault schools biography states that he ran for both Michigan State University and Appalachian State University before going on to teach in North Carolina, Virginia, and Louisiana.

Eventually, Martin made his way back up to Michigan. The rest is MITCA Hall of Fame history.

Apart from coaching track and cross country at Sault High, Martin also teaches civics and United States history.

According to the MITCA website, the coaching organization was founded in 1959 to recognize athletes and their coaches. Today, it has grown to approximately twelve hundred track and cross country coaches.
