The MacArthur Lock officially opened up for the 2024 shipping season to vessels this morning with the Harvest Spirit being the first through.

The Harvest Spirit locked through just after 11 a.m. on its way to Windsor, Ont.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the MacArthur Lock winter maintenance work included a dam safety periodic inspection to determine asset performance and conditions. These assessments drive future repairs to ensure the lock stays operational. In addition, crews will also perform a wide range of other maintenance tasks from fender timber replacements on the piers, to inspections and preventative maintenance on electrical and mechanical systems.

The official start of the shipping season was March 22, 2024 at 6 p.m. when the Poe Lock opened up and welcomed in the Joseph L. Block.

The shipping season will end Jan. 15, 2025 for winter maintenance.
