One man has been charged and a second suspect died during an investigating and arrest for narcotics trafficking in the area, according to a police news release.

During an ongoing investigation, Trident detectives bought a quarter-pound of methamphetamine from Nathan Chambers, a Bay City, Mich. native, after he traveled to Chippewa County, the release said.

Following the purchase, a traffic stop was made on his vehicle, during which time the vehicle failed to pull over in a timely manner. Chambers and a 22-year-old Sterling, Mich. man were taken into custody and brought to the Chippewa County Correctional Facility, the release continued.

However, both men had ingested a bag of narcotics prior to the arrest. Upon arrival at the jail, the Sterling man began to have a medical emergency, the release said. EMS was called to assist, but could not save the man's life. Chambers was brought to the hospital and later released back into the custody of the jail.

An autopsy revealed that the Sterling man died of acute methamphetamine toxicity.

Chambers has been charged with:

  • Delivery of methamphetamine
  • Conspiracy to deliver methamphetamine
  • Delivery of methamphetamine causing death

Chambers was arraigned in the 91st District Court and his total bond was set at $500,000 with conditions, including that he be monitored by a GPS tether. None of the charges have been proven in court.

The Michigan Sheriff’s Association Mission Team assisted Chippewa County Sheriff’s detectives in this investigation.
