Newly elected city commissioners swear in

Ray Bauer appointed to serve as mayor pro tem

Ray Bauer, Steve Habusta, and Scott Marble were elected to serve the city as commissioners on Nov. 8.

Marble came out ahead of the other candidates with 2,430 votes. Steve Habusta acquired 1,911 votes, and Ray Bauer collected 1,787 votes.

The commissioners were sworn in on Monday evening. Mayor Don Gerrie, who ran unopposed in the election, also swore in.

Bauer was appointed to serve the city commission as mayor pro tempore.

Bauer was first elected to the commission in 2005. He co-owns and operates Soo Brewing Company and 1668 Winery on the corner of Ashmun Street and Portage Avenue with his wife, Joan.

As commissioner, Habusta will serve on the city's planning commission board. Habusta currently serves as executive director of Chippewa County Community Foundation (CCCF), and director of Lake Superior State University Norris Center Operations and University Recreation department.

Marble will serve on the police and fire pension board. Marble was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, where he has lived for almost 49 years. He is currently employed at The Wicked Sister.

Former Commissioner Tim Talentino and former Mayor Pro Tempore Kathleen Twardy vacated their commission seats.

Talentino wished the new city commission the best of luck.

“It has been a great five years and fantastic learning experience,” he said.

Twardy said she felt honored to have served the city for 13 years.

“These are my friends forever,” she added. “Good luck.”

Mayor Don Gerrie thanked both Twardy and Talentino for their services to the city.

“I know you will still serve the city proudly, so thank you very much,” said Gerrie.
