MARQUETTE – The Superior Watershed Partnership and Land Conservancy (SWP) was awarded an EGLE Michigan Coastal Management Program (MCMP) grant totaling over $48,000 to assist Upper Peninsula coastal communities and Tribes address coastal hazards.

Coastal communities throughout the Great Lakes region have been hit particularly hard by more frequent and extreme storm events.

In the Upper Peninsula specifically, coastal communities are experiencing unprecedented coastal erosion and infrastructure damage due to the increased frequency and intensity of these storm events.

The SWP will utilize the Great Lakes Climate Corps (GLCC) to conduct specific field inventories in accordance with the SWP Great Lakes Inventory Plan to document existing conditions related to coastal hazards including but not limited to: coastal erosion, coastal wetland degradation, aquatic and terrestrial habitat degradation, invasive plant species, illegal dumping/marine debris, and other related coastal impacts.

SWP will also conduct training and provide technical assistance to identify resiliency projects within communities.

Upper Peninsula coastal communities and Tribes (Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron) interested in receiving assistance should complete this short survey: https://forms.gle/PkNzpwFE8rdmMRMB8.

Based on the survey results the SWP will be providing a limited number of communities the following services at no cost:

  • On-site coastal inventory and report
  • Assistance prioritizing coastal problems
  • Technical recommendations regarding coastal solutions
  • Identification of potential funding sources
  • Assistance writing grant proposals for project implementation

Any coastal community or Tribe in the Upper Peninsula is eligible, including communities on Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. However, this initial phase of the program will be limited to six coastal communities with the intention of expanding the program in the future.
