Sault's Downtown Access and Placemaking Project reaches completion

City infrastructure project opens access to many streets, adjacent parking lots connected to Arlington St., Court St., and Oaka Alley

The Downtown Access and Placemaking Project (DTAPP) has reached completion nearly five years after receiving $4,005,603.2 from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to improve public infrastructure placemaking within the city.

"We did street upgrades, parking lot upgrades, landscaping, interpretive pathways, ways to locate signs, and lighting," City of Sault Ste Marie Engineer David S. Boyle said.

The DTAPP project has increased access to Arlington St., from Osborn Blvd. to Ashmun St. and adjacent fire department parking lot; Court St., from Spruce St. to Maple St. and adjacent parking lots; Court St., from Dawson St. to Spruce St. and adjacent parking lots; and Oaka Alley and adjacent parking lots.

The MEDC covered the costs of a Certified Grant Administrator for $30,000. A total budget of $6,978,400 was authorized. A local match of $2,243,792.37 was provided by the city.

Boyle sought a public hearing at last night's regularly scheduled city commission meeting to close the MEDC community development grant for the newly completed DTAPP project.
