Rain is having an impact on local waste water treatment.

The Sault's water treatment plant superintendent informed the county health department and local media earlier today of the situation.

At around 1 p.m. today, flows entering the Sault Ste. Marie waste water treatment plant exceeded the capacity of the secondary treatment, requiring a portion of the flow to bypass, according to superintendent Brian Masterson.

Steady rain throughout the last evening and continuing today is the cause of the bypass, Masterson said.

Additionally with the rain there was a sanitary sewer overflow/combined sewer overflow at outfall 007 Bingham and Water location, the superintendent indicated in an email.

The county health department and local media were being informed under the waste water treatment facility's permit, state laws and department rules, according to the superintendent.
