Gladstone, MI - Need to gather firewood? With all existing permits set to expire on March 15, 2022, it's time to get your new Personal Use Firewood Cutting Permit. 

These non-commercial dead-and-down gathering permits cost $20 and are good for personal firewood gathering for one year from the date of purchase -- or when the purchased cords have been gathered, whichever comes first. Permits are sold at our district offices; schedule an appointment by calling one of the district offices: 

  • Munising District -- (906) 387-2512
  • Rapid River/Manistique Districts -- (906) 474-6442
  • St. Ignace or Sault Ste Marie Districts -- (906) 643-7900 or (906) 241-7322

If needed, please leave a message with your name and phone number and we will return your call.

Please have the following information on hand to obtain your permit: 

  • Full name
  • Phone Number
  • Driver’s license or other identification number and expiration date
  • Address
  • License plate number

Only standing dead and down trees may be gathered for firewood. Further guidelines for cutting will be provided with the permit. This authority applies only to non-commercial firewood cutting on Hiawatha National Forest system lands.
