New banner unveiled for former Blue Devils hockey coach Saturday

Fred DeVuono coached the 1984 and 1989 Blue Devil hockey teams to Sault Ste. Marie's only two state hockey championships

Before the puck was dropped Saturday afternoon at the hockey game between Sault High Blue Devils and the Port Huron Northern Huskies, there was a special ceremony remembering former coach, Fred DeVuono.

In 1975, DeVuono took over as head coach at Sault High where he held that position until 1989.

During that time, he would bring two State Championships to Sault Ste. Marie. The first one in 1984, then again in 1989. He would also have four state runner-up finishes with Sault High.

As head coach of the Blue Devils, he had 254 wins, 91 losses and nine ties.

In 2001, DuVuono received the honors and was inducted into the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame.

DuVuono passed away Sept. 24, 2019, at the age of 84.

Once a Blue Devil, always a Blue Devil.

Coach DeVuono will always watch over the bench of his beloved Sault Blue Devils hockey team as his banner proudly hangs.

The #9 ranked in Division 3 Blue Devils beat the #9 ranked in Division 2 Huskies 5-2 with strong second and third period showing.
