James Leland Popour, age 88, passed away in Cape Coral, Florida, on January 12, 2024. James was born to Alfred and Elsie (Bennette) Popour on May 9, 1935, in Nahma, Michigan.
James grew up in his hometown of Nahma and graduated from Nahma High School, where he met his sweetheart Barbara Newhouse, and the two married in 1954. In 1953, James started working at the House of Bargains Furniture Store in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and in the 80’s James bought the business and he and his son ran it for many decades.
James was a board member of the Central Savings Bank for over 20 years and in the Sault Ste. Marie Elks Moose Club.
In his free time James enjoyed playing softball, bowling, hunting, stream fishing for trout, gardening, and working on anything outdoors.
James is survived by his loving wife Barbara Jean; children, Troy of Sault Ste. Marie, and Cary of North Carolina; nieces and nephews, Steve (Cheryl) Ritter, Glen (Phyllis) Lamberg, Ken (Cindy) Bradshaw, Ernie (Tammy) Duglas, and Diane (Dave) Kuchan, Lynn (Jerry), Bob (Patti), and Jackie (Jay); and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Popour.
James was proceeded in death by his parents; siblings, Eileen Ritter and Alfred “Jr” Popour, “Duane” Popour; and daughter-in-law, Kellie Popour.

A Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 1, 2024, from 10:00AM – 12:30PM at Family Life Funeral Home, 4951 M-129, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783. The Funeral Service will begin at 12:30PM and a luncheon will follow at the Christopher Columbus Hall, 201 Sheridan Dr, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783.
The final resting place will be at Oaklawn Cemetery.
