John Kelsey Lawton, age 76, of DeTour Village, Michigan, died at his home on January 24, 2024. He was born on July 6, 1947, in Lansing, Michigan, to Clarence A. and Janith A. (Merritt) Lawton.
John grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and graduated from Sault High School in 1965. He attended Michigan Tech University and graduated with a bachelor’s in forestry. He worked as a tree trimmer for thirty years before retiring in 2005.
John was a member of the E-Free Church in Sault Ste. Marie and the IBEW Union in Sault Ste. Marie.
John loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching the freighters and wildlife. He loved spending time with his family and was very giving to people.
John is survived by his brother, Timothy Lawton of Gilbert, Arizona; and sisters, Mary Frances Morden of Sault Ste. Marie, Ellen Dawson of Lorain, Ohio, and Kathleen Smith of Lorain.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Janith; and brother, Merritt Lawton.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024, from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 PM, at the E-Free Church, 1901 John St, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783, with services to follow at 2:00 PM.
Final Resting Place will be at the Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Bruce Township, Michigan.
