On Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024, officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Rapids Drive for a 911 hang-up call. Chippewa County Central Dispatch had received a call that sounded like two subjects arguing but dispatch couldn’t reach anyone after the call had ended.

Responding officers made contact with an adult female at the residence who reported she had been assaulted-strangled by Cody Grant Monday, a 27-year-old male from Muskegon Heights, Mich. Cody Monday was not located at the residence because he and his juvenile child left in a vehicle prior to officers arriving. Responding officers coordinated with law enforcement in Mackinac Count and Monday was taken into custody at the Mackinac Bridge by the Michigan State Police. Monday was transported to the Chippewa County Jail where he was lodged. His daughter was turned over to an approved caretaker.

On Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024, Cody Grant Monday was arraigned in the 91st District Court on charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder or by strangulation, interfering with electronic communication, and domestic violence. Monday was given a personal recognizance bond with several restrictions such as GPS tether, house arrest, no out-of-state travel, and no contact with victim. Cody Grant Monday is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Department was assisted by the following agencies: Chippewa County Central Dispatch, Michigan State Police, Chippewa County Victims Services Unit, and Diane Peppler Resource Center.
