I-500 race track building broken into

Security camera footage from the track will be reviewed this week

Sault Ste. Marie City Police are investigating a break-in at the watering shed at the I-500 property.

The building was broken into sometime between 1 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Monday.

A volunteer at the track Monday afternoon noticed the window broken out at the shed and called I-500 Board member John Babcock. Soon after, city police were contacted.

Babcock tells SooLeader that the suspect, or suspects, broke a window on the south side of the shed with a piece of wood to gain entry. He said some pop, beer and liquor along with some slip-on ice grips for boots were stolen.

There are security cameras on the property and footage will be looked at this week to determine what time the break-in occurred and how many people were involved.

The watering shed is located on the north end of the infield and is used to fill the tankers up to make ice for the track leading up to race week.

The building also houses a meeting area for volunteers who prepare the track and property leading up to race week.
