Multiple arson charges levied against a Kincheloe man

Chippewa County Sheriff's Office found that the suspect had made an insurance claim for his loss in the fires

On 11-14-2023 at approximately 1315 hours, Central Dispatch received a 911 call in reference to a structure fire. Kinross fire and the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to 17 Forest Lodge in Kincheloe, Mich.

The fire was quickly put out with limited damage to the residence.

On 11-20-2023 at approximately 0808 hrs Central Dispatch received another 911 call in reference to a structure fire at the same residence.

The man living at the house was the 911 caller on both dates.

The Sheriff’s Office investigated the fires, interviewed the suspect and conducted a search warrant at the residence. It was found that the suspect had made an insurance claim for his loss in the fires. Mr. Joseph Smith was arrested on 12-1-2023 and lodged in the CCCF.

Joseph Anthony-Michael Smith, 25-year-old Kincheloe resident

Charges:

  1. Arson
  2. Arson
  3. Arson of an Insured Dwelling

Mr. Smith was arraigned in the 91st District Court on all charges. Smith is innocent until proven guilty.

MSP Fire Investigators, Kinross Fire and Central Dispatch assisted the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.
