On Monday, Jan. 15 at approximately 6:11 p.m. deputies from the Oscoda County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence on E. Royal Oak Road in Fairview for a well-being check of three residents. The responding deputy did not receive a response at the residence and did not note anything suspicious.

A family member reached out to the sheriff’s office and advised other family members were en route to the residence and would give permission for entry. At approximately 11:40 p.m. family members gave deputies access to the residence.

Deputies entered the residence, but had to back out due to heavy smoke inside. The Fairview Fire Department was called to the scene. Deputies entered the residence with firefighters and discovered two bodies inside the residence and one inside the attached garage. A preliminary investigation indicates the two persons found deceased inside the home, a 75-year-old and 51-year-old woman were possibly victims of a homicide.

The person in the garage, a 54-year-old man, was found with a pistol near him. It is believed he may have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. All persons inside the home were related to one another.

The Oscoda County Sheriff requested the Michigan State Police handle the investigation. A search warrant for the residence was obtained and the MSP Grayling Crime Lab, MSP K9, and MSP Fire Investigation Unit are currently on-site processing the scene. MSP Aviation is also assisting with mapping. There is no evidence indicating any suspects are at large and the public is in no danger.
