First it was free fishing weekend, then free off-roading.

Now outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy Michigan’s first ever Free Snowmobiling Weekend, which debuts Feb. 11 and 12.

Grab your friends and ride 6,000-plus miles of the Department of Natural Resources’ designated snowmobile trails, public roads and public lands (where authorized) on back-to-back days.

Residents and out-of-state visitors legally will be able to ride without the requirement of a snowmobile registration or trail permit, the DNR said in a news release.

However, all other snowmobile rules and safety certificate requirements still apply, and a Recreation Passport is required where applicable.

The free weekend was approved through a bill in the Michigan Legislature to create an opportunity for experienced riders to bring along friends new to the sport who may get "hooked on the experience for a lifetime", the DNR said.

Michigan already offers Free ORV and Free Fishing weekends each year, with the winter free fishing weekend set for this upcoming Feb. 18 and 19.
