Blue Devils girls' team heading into playoffs with 17-2 record

Blue Devils have won 11 games in a row with two hard-fought victories against Petoskey and Escanaba

With only two losses in the regular season, the Sault High girls' basketball team is gearing up for a long playoff run.

Their 17-2 overall record is impressive as they rolled along being Straits Area Conference Champs with a 7-0 record.

Heading into the playoffs, the Blue Devils have won 11 games in a row with two hard-fought victories against two very good teams, Petoskey (14-8 record) and Escanaba (18-2 record), to end the regular season.

Coach Pat Bennin has nothing but praise for the hard work, not just by his seniors but the underclassmen as well.

"We have had a great year; the chemistry of the team has been excellent throughout. We have improved tremendously this year defensively, and we are on an 11-game win streak heading into district play," Bennin said.

But in the playoffs, every team basically starts out with a 0-0 record, and anybody can beat anyone on a given day.

"We know that winning the districts will be a tough task as we open on the road against Alpena (8-14 record). We are looking forward to the post-season and hoping to make a good tournament run this year," Bennin added.

Some key stats in the regular show that a balanced attack by three seniors:

  • Claire Erickson - 13 ppg and 8.5 rebounds per game
  • Laura Innerebner - 11.2 ppg and 7.0 rebounds per game
  • Mackenzie Bell - 9.0 ppg and 4.0 rebounds per game

What is possibly more impressive, and what Bennin really depends on, is their tenacious defence that only allows 29.8 points a game, while their offence scores 54.2 points a game.

They will play in Alpena on Monday, Feb. 27, at 6 p.m.
