Richard Lee Scheffers, age 86, of DeTour, Michigan, passed peacefully in his sleep on February 17, 2024. He was born on August 24, 1937, in Grand Haven, Michigan, to Simon and Chrystal (Rogers) Scheffers.
Dick grew up in Grand Haven and graduated from Grand Haven High School with the Class of 1955. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1957 and served until he was honorably discharged in 1963. He met Gaye Grimes and they married on June 24, 1961, in Grand Haven. They moved to DeTour in 1976 where they owned and operated Caribou Lake Grocery Store and Resort from 1976 – 1989. They then opened Fortino’s Pizzeria and Boundary Waters Resort with their children and operated those from 1992 – 2002. Dick and Gaye also sold real estate for several years until they retired in 2004.
Dick was a member and past commander of the Raber Am-Vets Post 79, and a member of the Berlin LeClerc Rifle Team from 1957-1959.
Dick enjoyed camping, fishing, and wood cutting. He also loved playing cards, cribbage and cruising with friends and family.
Dick is survived by his wife, Gaye of Detour; daughter Susan (Matthew) Schultz of DeTour; son, James (Vickie) Scheffers of Sage, Arkansas; grandchildren, Riley Schultz, Amilia Scheffers, and Dakota Scheffers; sisters, Nancy Allen of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Donna Pope of Grand Rapids.
Dick was preceded in death by his son, Perry Scheffers; parents, Simon and Chrystal Scheffers; father and mother-in-law, Michael and Jeanne Fortino; and father-in-law George Grimes.
