Larry Dean Stowitts, age 83, of St. Ignace, Michigan, died at his home, surrounded by loved ones, on April 22, 2024. He was born on July 23, 1940, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Ralph Shattuck and Harriet A. (Hatch) Stowitts.
Larry grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan, and when he was ten years old, he moved to Grand Rapids. He graduated from Comstock Park High School with the Class of 1958. After he graduated, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard, serving for six years, before moving back home. He met Tarry Berry, at the place they both worked, where they hit it off instantly, and they married on August 5, 1967, where they started their family. He traveled a lot for work and his family followed him to Illinois and Wisconsin before he retired and settled in Michigan.
Larry was a member of the St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in St. Ignace. He also volunteered as a Boy Scout Master, Friends of PFLAG, Dart Ball, Worldwide Marriage Encounter, Friends of Library, baptism prep, and at the local food pantry.
Larry adored lighthouses, especially when his son built him a 700 lb. replica. He visited nearly every lighthouse in Michigan and traveled to Canada to see more. He also liked trains, traveling, and exploring. He was an introvert but loved going out to see the sites that the world had to offer. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and bowling.
Larry is survived by his wife, Tarry; sons, Robert (Greg) Stowitts, and Edward (Dawn) Stowitts; daughter, Christine (Michael) Maybach; grandchildren, Corban, and Dakota; and sister, Stephanie “Stevie” Walker of Battle Creek, Michigan.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph, and Harriet; and brothers, Ron, and Howard.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 11:00 AM, with memorial mass at 12:00 Noon, at the St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church.
